Which are the major currency pairs and indices as per ESMA?

In another article we spoke about the leverage distinctions for CFDs as per the new ESMA regulation. These leverage limits vary according to the volatility of the underlying asset which are classified as major and non-major for the purpose of ESMA. So which are the currency pairs and indices considered as major?

Major currency pairs (leverage 30:1)

EUR/USD       USD/EUR       JPY/EUR       GBP/EUR       CAD/EUR      CHF/EUR
 

EUR/JPY        USD/JPY        JPY/USD       GBP/USD       CAD/USD      CHF/USD
 

EUR/GBP       USD/GBP       JPY/GBP       GBP/JPY        CAD/JPY       CHF/JPY
 

EUR/CAD       USD/CAD       JPY/CAD       GBP/CAD       CAD/GBP      CHF/CAD
 

EUR/CHF        USD/CHF       JPY/CHF       GBP/CHF        CAD/CHF       CHF/GBP

All other currency pairs are considered non-major. These will have a leverage of 20:1

Major Indices (leverage 20:1)

  • FTSE 100 (UK)
  • CAC 40 (France)
  • DAX 30 (Germany)
  • DowJone Industrial Average (DJIA)
  • S&P500 (US)
  • Nasdaq 100 (US)
  • Nikkei 225 (Japan)
  • S&P/ASX 200 (Australia)
  • EuroStoxx 50 (Europe top 50)

All other indices are considered non-major. These will have a leverage of 10:1.
